隨著能量的增大宇宙射線質(zhì)量的測量越來越困難。“日美合作乳膠實驗”(JACEE)的聯(lián)合高空氣球?qū)嶒灲Y果,提供了能量高達1015eV的有價值的重要資料。這項實驗是在高空氣球浮升到含量不到0.5%的大氣頂層進行的。得到的結論是,雖然大氣效應仍待改正,這里能不受影響地在大氣中觀測到宇宙射線。JACEE實驗是由日本、美國和波蘭研究人員協(xié)作進行的,一系列的長期氣球飛行已經(jīng)積累了大量數(shù)據(jù)?;緦嶒炗商綔y宇宙射線、測定其電荷和能量等幾項工作組成。由于能夠進行研究的能量范圍寬,所以這些測量特別重要。因為探測系統(tǒng)非常龐大,探測器能在多次飛行中反復利用,所以觀測的時間也很長。實驗采用大面積和長時間就意味著,宇宙射線粒子雖然稀少,卻可以探測到相當數(shù)量的高能宇宙射線。
