意大利格朗薩索（Gran Sasso）國(guó)家地下實(shí)驗(yàn)室（位于地下1400米深處）DAMA實(shí)驗(yàn)組從1996年開始選用放射性本底極低的碘化鈉晶體陣列來探測(cè)WIMP。實(shí)驗(yàn)的初步結(jié)果觀察到了碘化鈉晶體中的原子核與WIMP粒子碰撞的效應(yīng)也隨季節(jié)有微小的變化，即觀察到了它的年調(diào)制效應(yīng)，并由此推算出WIMP粒子的質(zhì)量至少比質(zhì)子大50倍，引起世界科學(xué)界的重視。（右圖為安裝在意大利格朗薩索國(guó)家實(shí)驗(yàn)室中的碘化鈉晶體陣列）中國(guó)科學(xué)家參加了此項(xiàng)國(guó)際合作。DAMA組的結(jié)果說明了有WIMP可能存在的初步證據(jù)，但美國(guó)斯坦福大學(xué)的科學(xué)家作了與DAMA類似的實(shí)驗(yàn)，尚未能證實(shí)DAMA的結(jié)果。最后的結(jié)論還有期待國(guó)際上更多實(shí)驗(yàn)的結(jié)果，例如，建在英國(guó)北約克郡(North Yorkshire)海岸博爾比(Boulby)地下1100米深處鹽鉀堿礦的英國(guó)暗物質(zhì)實(shí)驗(yàn)中心已經(jīng)于2003年4月28日正式啟動(dòng)。
